Game 63 of 82: Utah Jazz vs. New York Knicks (27-36)

March 11, 2015

Pre-Game Quotage
** Quin Snyder on the Knicks
NBA teams can beat anyone on any given night…They could easily bounce back tonight [after a loss at Denver], and you might get their very best game.
** Snyder, asked why the Jazz have improved defensively
We’ve worked. We’ve worked, I mean, from the very beginning, and you know, obviously people point to Rudy [Gobert]. Rudy’s been great. Rudy playing, you know, Rudy’s played minutes the whole year. I think the key thing is the lineup. You know, Rudy’s minutes have increased some, but he’s been on the court a lot even when we weren’t as good defensively. So I think he’s gotten better. If you look at Rudy’s defense off the ball, even his shot blocking, but he’s doing other things. His pick and roll defense has been even better. M–[Derrick] Fav[ors], playing with Rudy, is at the “four,” and he’s a unique defender at the four. What he’s able to do is learn to guard more and more out on the perimeter, and take advantage of his matchup with smaller guys, which we’ll continue to see. And then Dante [Exum]’s emerged at the point, you know, where we have a guy that, with his length at the point, he’s unique and I think he makes Trey [Burke] better, you know, when Trey comes in. And everybody’s raised each other’s level, but it, you know, it’s no, it’s the same old formula, right? Attention to detail, commitment, and hard work. That’s a pretty good formula, isn’t it?

snyder beethovenIt’s been hours and I can’t stop laughing over this. H/T @JosephHorner, who noticed it first.

** Derrick Favors on what he’s been trying to accomplish since the All-Star break
I just took it upon myself just to be another offensive threat out there on the court. And you know, basically, I just wanted to just continue to get better on the offensive end. You know, continue to improve my game and extend my range.
** Favors, asked how fun it is to play with Rudy Gobert
You should ask him how fun it is to play with me, man, basically. But nah, man, nah, Rudy, I mean, it’s fun playing with Rudy, man. He’s a guy who, you know, you pressuring your man on the perimeter, you know he’s back there, he got your back, basically. You know, he’s a good shot blocker, a great rebounder, and you know, he does a lotta stuff that don’t show up in the stats. You know, setting good screens and you know, rolling to the paint and drawing a lotta attention that give guys a lotta open shots. And you know, just by him being by the rim, his long arms, you know, he get a lotta offensive rebounds. So you know, it’s a lotta fun playing with him.
** Derrick Favors on the Knicks
They still an NBA team, basically, you know?…They still got some good players over there. You know, you just can’t look at they record and base them off that. You know, they still a good team.
** Gordon Hayward on the Knicks
You know, there’s still NBA players over there. There’s still NBA talent, no matter who they put out on the court…No matter who it is, they can be dangerous and we can lose.

Post-Game Quotage
** Quin Snyder on the game
Tonight was a case of getting out of character, and guys doing too much stuff on their own, on both ends. Our communication wasn’t good. The first three plays of the game were breakdowns. We made just enough plays…We didn’t come out at halftime ready to go at all. We didn’t come out at the start of the game ready to go…Derrick Favors was an absolute anchor. But we had some guys that weren’t ready to play, and some guys that got out of character and you know, that can happen. It’s not like it’s a shock that it happened tonight, to me. But it still makes me mad.
** Snyder on why lesser names like Tyler Zeller or Cole Aldrich have had more success against Rudy Gobert
I love Rudy. You know, and, but Rudy also is learning. You know, and he can’t block every shot. And there’s times when, I think in both those cases, the guys shot the ball quickly. You know, they knew he was coming to block a shot…Rudy’s gonna keep getting better. He’s gotta stay focused on the right stuff. And I don’t feel like he’s lost concentration in those situations against those two guys. I feel like he’s lost concentration at times in pick and roll defense, you know, but those situa–I think Rudy’s respectful of who he’s playing against.
** Snyder on the Knicks
Give New York credit. You know, they had a tough night last night, and you know, [Derek] Fish[er] had ’em ready to play. They’ve had a hard year. To go on the road and perform the way that team did tonight, you know, they should, you know, they should be proud. I know they, you know, I was impressed with everything that they did. You know, there was, they took advantage of us, and guys stepped up. They played with confidence, and they showed a lot of character. That’s hard to do when you take a tough loss like they did last night.

** Derrick Favors on the Jazz’s defense
I mean, we had a big improvement from the beginning of the season ’til now, but you know, we can’t buy too much into it ’cause now, teams are starting to understand that we got a good defense. So now, they scouting and you know, figuring out ways to get past our defense. So we gon have to start, you know, getting a lot better, or communicating a lot better and play a lot harder on defense.
** Favors on his mindset going into the game
I just wanted to come out and be aggressive and just try to hold the team down ’til everybody get into a rhythm, which I did in the first half. And you know, in the second half, everybody else got into a rhythm, so we started playing through them. Playing through, like, Rodney [Hood] and Joe [Ingles] and all those guys.
** Rudy Gobert on the game
It was tough at the end to win the game. But I think we could have been more disciplined throughout the game, and get a bigger lead, you know? And they just stayed in the game because of our mistakes all game long, and I mean, if we don’t make a couple shots at the end, we could’ve lost the game, you know? So, I think we played good defense in the money time, but we should’ve been, like, more disciplined for the four quarters…If that was better team, or a very good team, we probably would have lost the game because of our mistakes, you know? But I hope we learn and next game, we come out and stay focused all the time.
** Rodney Hood on playing the point
That was my first time in that position, and just gotta be, you know, more sure with where I’m going with the ball. At the end, you know, I was able to make one play, but it was other plays where I wish, you know, I could’ve did something else. So it just, you know, something I gotta watch tape on and get better at.
** Hood on Quin Snyder wanting him to be more aggressive
It was times where, at the end of the game where, you know, shot clock was going down and I could’ve been aggressive and not pass it up, and put, you know, probably my teammate in a bad position. So he just wants me to be aggressive, you know, whether that’s getting to the basket, and he’ll live with the result.
