Game 30 of 82: Utah Jazz vs. Philadelphia 76ers (10-20)

December 28, 2014

Ugly win with a capital Ugh. But, emphasis on the “win” part.

In some small corner of the world, however, this will probably forever be remembered as the night Steve Brown debuted the goatee.

Pre-Game Quotage
** Quin Snyder on Brett Brown
I consider him a good friend, someone that I really respect a lot in the business. … When I was in Austin, I made a point of spending as much time in San Antonio during the year, but in the summer particularly, I essentially lived in San Antonio. And he was someone whose brain I always wanted to pick. And learned a ton from him, and you know, have followed when he coached the Australian national team. I always enjoy seeing what they were gonna run, ’cause I think he’s very creative. You know, like I said, he’s somewhat of a mentor for me in the business.
** Dante Exum on Brett Brown
He was actually the first guy that brought me to a national team camp, and then after that he resigned from the job. But you know, he kind of opened up the relationship from the start, and I went [to Philadelphia] for a draft workout, and you know, had dinner with him and everything, so.

Post-Game Quotage
** Quin Snyder, post-game
The first half, I thought we did a pretty good job defensively. You know, neither team could make a shot, so the game obviously reflected that. I thought, I just didn’t think we were tough enough, with the ball; tough enough offensively. But when we did get good shots, we missed them too. …
I just didn’t think we were tough enough as a group, and you know, the, no matter whether you’re making your shot or not, to just have somebody just take the ball from you, or you know, to throw a lazy passes, and you know, there’s a, there’s part of it there where you just gotta [grunt], you know, like, “No. That’s not gonna happen again. I’m not gonna let him hit it out of my hands again. I’m gonna hold it stronger. I’m gonna be tougher.” And it’s just not, you know, if you’re looking for other reasons why that, you know, “Hey, I thought I got fouled” or “Well, he reached in” or, you know, that’s not gonna do it.
** Snyder on Patrick Christoper’s debut
He passed up an open shot, which I want him to take. You know, that’s, especially tonight, he couldn’t have done any worse than anyone else. But he, you know, I thought he gave us some toughness. I thought he came in with the right mindset defensively.

** Gordon Hayward, post-game
They’re a team that likes to muck it up, and we played down to their level, I think, for most of the game, especially during the third quarter. But we picked it up at the end.
** Hayward, asked if Michael Carter-Williams’ 2-20 night shows how good Trey Burke can be defensively
I think it was all of us, collectively. Trey did a good job of pressuring him, and you know, we had a game plan. I think we stuck to it, and he had problems with that all night.
** Derrick Favors, post-game
We came out here first with a lack of energy, but once it came down to the fourth quarter, you know, I think everybody just wanted to get the game over with. So we just picked up the energy, picked up the intensity, got stops on defense. And on the offensive end, everybody took they time, everybody touched the ball, and we made shots.
** Trey Burke, post-game
I think a lot of times on the offensive end tonight, we were looking for fi–or looking for calls from the refs, rather than just playing through contact. And that kind of, you know, hurt us in the first half, hurt us in the third quarter. I think in the fourth quarter, we just played, and that’s what type of team we are. We’re a second-half team. You know, we’re still trying to learn how to, you know, bring that same energy to the first half.

Random Stuff, etc.

** Comment from Kirk four days ago: “I think you should start checking Haywards hair. Bangs down we win..”

Here’s the official(ly useless) tally:
Jazz record pre-haircut: 3-4
Jazz record post-haircut, hair did (bangs up): 5-15
Jazz record post-haircut, hair not did (bangs down): 2-1

** Enes Kanter is Furkan Aldemir’s BFF from Aldemir’s Turkish U-16 team. (CSN Philly, H/T @saltcityhoops)
** As can be seen above and also below, Rudy Gobert is a social media delight. May he remain forever uncensored and unsilenced (RIP Fun Enes).
