Game 17 of 82: Utah Jazz vs. Los Angeles Clippers (5-12)

November 30, 2014

Post-Game Quotage
** Quin Snyder on the game
[The Clippers] put you in more positions where they, you know, your inconsistencies and your mistakes just become more visible. We started poorly…That’s unfortunate. Because when you’re playing from behind all game, it’s tough to generate emotion and enthusiasm. And that’s what we need, to make up for some of those [inconsistencies and mistakes]. We’re gonna have that. We’re young. You know, gotta keep going. But the emotion and energy and the intensity, I think, can, you know, can mitigate that somewhat.
** Snyder on whether he might play Derrick Favors with Rudy Gobert more in the future
I’m not sure, to be honest with you…It seemed appropriate [tonight]. We’re trying to figure out a way to give ourselves a boost. And you know, it gives us a very different look offensively. So, you know, Derrick’s all of a sudden guarding out on the perimeter. Ch–you know, he’s pretty good inside too. I mean, he’s, I think it just depends on who we’re playing.

** Gordon Hayward, asked what’s the cause of the slow starts
I don’t know. That’s a good question. It’s something we’ve been struggling with. Hopefully, we can figure it out…We have another day tomorrow where we can try to get better.
** Hayward, asked whether commitment or execution is lacking defensively
I mean, it’s mental mistakes. Mental fa–mental loss of focus…We’ve run up against some very good offensive teams that know how to exploit things, and we make one mistake, you have a couple guys that don’t do their job, and they make you pay. … It’s a process for sure, but I feel like we’re deep enough into this that some of the mistakes is just unacceptable. And we keep talking about ’em too, and gotta be better, man. At some point in time you just gotta be better. We gotta be able to look at ourselves in the mirror and say, “I didn’t do my job, and I gotta be better.”…Something happens, [players need to say] “I need to do my job on this possession,” every possession.

** Derrick Favors, asked what’s the cause of the slow starts
Tell you the truth, I have no idea. Something we just gonna have to work out, and get better at.
Are you overthinking on the floor when the other team takes away what you want to do?
No, not really. Just, teams just come out hot against us in the first quarter. You know, we come out. We take shots that we normally make, but we miss ’em, and you know, the team, the other team just come out and ju–they make open shots. So it’s just something we gotta fix.
** Favors, asked what this team is lacking defensively
I think guys just gotta buy into it. You know, just give they all on the defensive end of the court. You know, give they all effort, 100 percent effort on the defensive end of the court.

** Enes Kanter, asked what does this team need more than anything
I mean, we just have forget about this game. We have a lot of teams coming up, so we just have to, you know, to just keep getting better.
** Kanter, asked if he’s more focused this year than last year, and if he feels he is as consistently focused as he wants to be
Yeah, definitely. I mean, I want to get, I wanted to be better. But you know, it’s gonna get, it’s gonna take some times. And there’s some, there’s gonna be some games, downs, up–downs and ups. So, just can’t worry about it. Just keep playing.

** People calling Johnnie Bryant “Johnnie Ryan”: Steve Brown
** Tonight, we learned that Matt Harpring’s facial hair does not grow evenly on both sides of his face.

Unintentional Dirty Quote Machines of the Night (UDQM)
** Matt Harpring on a replay: Watch [Jamal] Crawford come right here in the middle of your picture.
** Harpring on Ty Lawson: When he’s healthy, he can be a Top…[long pause]…you know, 7 point guard, maybe a [Top] 5.
** Harpring on Gordon Hayward: He’s been a one-man show this quarter.
Steve Brown: He kept that dribble alive. Just kept probing, probing ’til finally he found a little gap.
** Harpring: You gotta love it when guys play both ends.
** Harpring on Crawford: This guy has a knack of getting body contact and foul and be able to finish.
Brown: That was just amazing, that he finished. (H/T @CS_Larsen)
** Quin Snyder, post-game: When you’re down early, it’s difficult.
