Preseason Game 5 of 8: Utah Jazz at Los Angeles Clippers (4-1)

Loved the fight. Loved the flow. Love that there were non-iso plays run out of timeouts down the stretch. Love that there were offensive/defensive substitutions at the end. Love that players that were on the team last year look like they’ve taken giant leaps. Love how this felt nothing like a preseason game. Even loved the ugly stretches, because you can see where they’re trying to go with it. And love that the Jazz have some nasty again.

Post-Game Quotage
** Quin Snyder, post-game
You know, we’ve been talking about trying to learn, and there’s a ton of opportunities to do that tonight. You know, just, you can’t not be happy with how our guys competed…I’m proud of how they competed.

** Gordon Hayward on whether he was surprised by the level of intensity in a preseason game
No. I mean, I think for us, we’re competing. And we beat ’em last time, and I think they wanted to try to come out there and knock us out, and I think they might’ve been a little surprised we hung with ’em. And we had the lead there down late in the game…A couple balls bounce a different way, you know, maybe we walk out of this one with a win.
** Hayward on what the team can learn from this game
I think we just, we learned that we can compete with really good teams. We do it the right way, we do the right thing, and there at the end coach drew up an excellent play. We came out and executed it, gave us the lead and got us a dunk, and that was huge. And so that was good confidence for us, and you know, I think we’re, I like the way we’re headed.
** Dante Exum, asked if the game has slowed down for him
Yeah, definitely, and you know, it’s just a game-to-game thing. And you know, when I first, started my first game, it was just at a high pla–pace, 100 miles per hour. So you know, I’m just trying to adjust to every game, and you know, I think I’m doing t–well.

** Trevor Booker on his scuffle with Blake Griffin
Obviously, he thought it was a flagrant. I thought it was a good foul. It got a little heated. [He] grabbed my head. That’s a–when I got mad.
Are you surprised it got that heated in a preseason game?
Not really, because it was him. We have our history.
What’s the history, Trevor?
We got into it before. Nothing major, though.

Random Stuff, etc.

Unintentional Dirty Quote Machines of the Night (UDQM)
** Steve Brown, quoting Alex Jensen on Blake Griffin: He said, “We just cannot let him get the ball as deep as he enjoyed it on Monday.”
** Matt Harpring: There’s weak side action going on even though the ball’s on the strong side. (H/T @5kl)
** Brown on Griffin dunk: That’s just simply an accident waiting to happen if you get in front of that.
** Brown on Jamal Crawford and Dante Exum: The old veteran rubbed off the rookie.
** Clippers announcer: Blake is grabbing his groin. His hand has been there the entire time back-peddling. (H/T @dianaallen)
** Brown as the game goes to break: Hawes, on that play, ends up on his backside. So, DeAndre Jordan, you gotta watch out for him. Why? Because he can make you pay if you don’t keep your eyes on him. It’s up! And now it’s down.
** David Locke: Booker penetrates into the body of Hawes. (H/T @edwin_nba via @andrewwallock8)
** Clippers announcer on Dante Exum: You just don’t see point guards THAT long. (H/T Lou Allen)
** Matt Harpring: Hayward going up, not soft. (H/T @5kl)
** Clippers announcer on Derrick Favors: He gobbles up a ton of balls. (H/T Lou Allen)
** Brown on DeAndre Jordan: You cannot look away from this guy at all when he’s inside.
** Brown on the NBA’s replay center in Secaucus: They will get every angle that the home cameras have to take a look at this. Every game is fed into See-cock-us and this is what they’re looking at.
** Brown on Griffin: How much is he going to be penalized, putting the hand behind his neck and then trying to go after it even further?
** Gordon Hayward, post-game: I think it was another one where we could really use those experiences and help us when we get to the real thing.

The people fouling Blake thing always reminds me of Rodman playing Malone in the finals, so I cannot feel good about the strategy.

Other than that, words cannot express how badly I want to see this team play.

You’re too kind, and your memory for random fellow fans is incredible. :) I’m indeed alive, well and thankful you keep up with the awesome Jazz coverage, which brings a little bit of light in my life in the country where basketball is as popular as curling!

You’re hardly random! I know the time difference is horrible but hope you get to catch some Jazz games this year. This season’s going to be great! :) :) :)

I still don’t get how that was a flagrant. I watched all angles a couple times and if he hit the face it was the slightest of brushes with the nose as his arm swung and hit the ball/arms… Hard foul for sure but it was a play on the ball and he even tried to steady his descent. LAC are a really unlikable team with Blake/CP3/Barnes.

Also DJ with 2 blatant goaltends that were not called….This ain’t euroleague.

Whiniest and most whiny-faced team in the league.
