Game 54 of 82: Utah Jazz at Portland Trail Blazers (19-35)

February 22, 2014

Pre-Game Quotage
** Tyrone Corbin on Damian Lillard
He keeps coming. You know, he keeps coming for a young guy.* You know, [Trey Burke]’s played him a couple times here, so you gotta understand, he’s down, All-Star break, spent some time with him there. And he’s a great player. Young player who’s gotten better every night out there on the floor. So it’s a great example for [Burke] to understand the work that it takes to continue to get better in this league.
** Corbin, asked whether he’s happy with his young core to this point
We’re getting better. We made some strides. You know, it’s, young guys in this league, man, you take a couple steps forward, and at times you may take a couple steps back. And that’s just, building guys in this league. And one of the things that, you know, we, the guys we have a couple years experience with, is they’re playing different roles. So how do they handle the load that they have? And I think we’re getting better in those areas.

Post-Game Quotage
** Tyrone Corbin on the loss
I thought the pressure in the fourth quarter, give their veterans credit…They came out right from the beginning of the fourth. We got a turnover, they got a 3-point shot, we got, made another, a mistake, and they scored on it, and they ran from there.* So, give them the credit. Their veterans took ’em through in the fourth, and we didn’t respond to it. You know, that’s part of growing with a young group, what it takes to finish games out.**
* Re “give their veterans credit”: Damian Lillard, a second-year player, scored 14 points in the 4th quarter, including 11 straight and scoring and assisting on 16 of the Blazers’ 19 points from the “they ran from there” point.
** Re “we didn’t respond to it” and “that’s part of growing with a young group”: Just for the record, Richard Jefferson and Marvin Williams both played 7+ minutes in the fourth.

** Enes Kanter on tying his career high in points
You know, I’m just trying to do my job. You know, just trying to help my teammates, and you know, I’m, last six, eight, like, last I can remember what games, I’m just trying to be a defensive-minded player. You know, I think, that’s what more important and that’s what coach tell me do too.
** Trey Burke on whether rest during the All-Star break made a difference
I think so. You know, the rest that I got over All-Star Weekend wasn’t the type of rest that I wanted, but it was enough. And you know, I think it’s helping me out starting off this second half of the season. You know, I just gotta continue to be aggressive and make plays for others on this team.
