Bits from Practice, 1/24
** Tyrone Corbin, asked what the focus is for practice this week
Getting better. Getting better on both ends of the floor.
** Corbin on how concerned he is about players “letting down” before the All-Star break
Well, it’s a young team. And then, and you, it’s one of, another stage in the year that you have to learn to fight your way through it. And you know, as we, this bunch develop themselves together, it’s one of the things they have to understand, that the focus have to be on each and every game, everybody engaged in it.
** Corbin, asked for his thoughts on the optimal defensive scheme when Phoenix is having success spreading the floor with five 3-point shooters while the best defensive teams are playing two bigs
It’s, you know, it’s just guys playing with numbers. And I mean, that’s, you know, when it’s going good, they jump on the bandwagon and say this is where things should go because that’s what they can make an argument for. But you look at the, you average things out, and go back to the old way of playing.
So, that’s what you have to deal with when, you know, somebody’s doing something and it works out that particular night or for a short stretch, and everybody get on the bandwagon. That’s how people are. And you know, they look at numbers, they look at games, and, “Hey, this is interesting, let’s jump on this one.”
And then everybody else is criticized ’cause they’re not doing it. So, it’s just the way that the game is now. And so many guys got a voice in it, that, you know, you have to deal with it.
All the best effective field goal percentage defensive teams had two bigs last year…
It’s not just last year. So, but, you gotta deal with it.
** Corbin on Hot Rod Hundley’s Alzheimer’s diagnosis
You know, it’s sad, you know, to, but it’s, you know, we’re praying that, you know, that he continue to fight, and you know, that life is as good as it can be for him.
** Trey Burke on fans’ talk of tanking
It’s, the word I’m looking for is, I don’t know. It, I hate it, pretty much. You know, I hate when I do see people saying things like, man, you know, tank for, you know, whoever is in the next draft, because that draft hasn’t even came, first of all.
And second of all, as a player, it’s kind of disrespectful, you know, seeing things like that because, you know, you go out there every single night, and you know, you play with all your heart, and you know, this is the game you’ve been playing your whole life.
And when you do see people, you know, whoever it is, saying, you know, tank for Wiggins or for Parker or whoever it is next year, it makes us as players, like, feel disrespected just because you know, even though we are losing right now, it’s a growing process. If those guys do get here, then great. You know, they can make this franchise even better.
But for now, you know, for this moment, you know, if you’re a fan, you just need to be a fan of who’s on the team and you have to respect, you know, what we do.
** Gordon Hayward on whether he sees himself as an All-Star/max player
I definitely feel like I can be an All-Star in this league. You know, I just, obviously it’s still gonna take a lot of work. I think I’ve taken steps in that direction this year. And every single year, I’ve tried to come in and improve, and get better as a player, and you know, I can see myself being in that category for sure.
** Derrick Favors on not making the Team USA player pool
I was happy for Gordon. I was excited for him, but you know, just added-on motivation. You know, I wasn’t selected, so you know, it’s all good, but Imma continue to work and hopefully, you know, I’ll get a chance to make it next time. (KALL, 1280)
