Game 24 of 82: Utah Jazz at Sacramento Kings (5-19)

December 12, 2013

Yes, this really happened. Happy bench smiling at the end of the game!

Though really, if we think about it, could the Jazz have possibly not won with this completely epic game preview from the Jazz Game Night production team (via @JazzGameNight)?

Post-Game Quotage
** Tyrone Corbin on the game
This group of guys, man, as I’ve said before, I can’t say enough about how much do I appreciate them, staying in there, keep working, trying to get better™. And through all of our struggles, they just keep working, and we’ll get better™ as a result of that.
** Corbin on injuries
We haven’t been together completely, with everybody on the floor, for long stretches this year yet. And even through training camp, we haven’t had all the guys. So as we get all of everybody on the floor, we should be able to get better™…We’ll just keep working at it to see where we can finish off.
** Corbin on Richard Jefferson
He’s been super, man. / He’s been Superman. I, you know, I can’t say enough about how he, not only on the floor, how he’s helping lead the guys in the locker room. He’s able to make shots. He play. He don’t try and sit out in drills in practice so the young guys can see what it takes to be successful in this league. And then he and Marvin [Williams], the veteran guys on this team, are showing these guys the right things of how we can get better™.

chest-bumpOld-school, old-man, earthbound, verticality-challenged chest bump between Richard Jefferson and Brandon Rush :)

** Gordon Hayward on the game
It was real fun, especially the way we shared the basketball. And you know, people are playing for their teammates, not for themselves. And I think that’s the reason why we shot the ball so well, and the reason why we came out on top.
** Trey Burke on Derrick Favors and Marvin Williams
Those guys are key pieces to our offense. Favs, you know, did a great job on DeMarcus [Cousins] tonight. You know, he’s a load down there, and he did a really good job containing him, you know, kind of frustrating him a little bit. You know, Marv came in and made some open shots, stretched the floor out, you know, was talking on defense, you know, being that leader that we need him to be out there on the court, and you know, and things like this happen when we all do our job.
** Marvin Williams on Derrick Favors
I gotta take my hat off to Derrick, man. That’s an extremely good player over there [in DeMarcus Cousins], not to mention how large he is. You know, he’s a very big individual, but he’s very skilled, man. Very skilled, very powerful. I mean, Derrick came in, from the moment the game started, man, he was a presence down there. He was huge. He’s a big reason why we won this game.
** Derrick Favors on guarding DeMarcus Cousins
You know, he’s a good player, but you know, at the same time you can’t back down from him. You know, you back down from him, he gon punk you all game. So you know, my whole thing was come in, you know, play him tough, and you know, just try to make him make tough baskets.

kanter-spinGorgeous spin move!

** Richard Jefferson on Tyrone Corbin
Coach Corbin is doing a great job of keeping everybody focused and at the end goal, not just game by game. It’s like, “Hey, we’re getting better. We’re improving.”
** RJ on Trey Burke
He’s played great. He made a couple of plays tonight, which shows his improvement. He’s been driving into those trees quite a bit, and tonight he had that little drop-off pass to Gordon [Hayward…and] later in the quarter he looked over his shoulder to see if there was somebody right there and then went up and finished it. And that’s something that you can see the progression. You can see the game starting to slow down. ‘Cause again, this is only, like, his 13th game, with no pre-season. So he’s getting better, and I couldn’t be happier for him.
** RJ on the play in the gif below
I’m gonna share something with the fans out in Utah. It’s been so long since I’ve cracked 20 [points], and I used to average 20 multiple times. So when I hit that three and I saw I had 18, I looked up and we were up about 20-something. I’m like, “Richard”–you guys see me, I try and move the ball. I play the right way. I really believe in that, and I was like–“Richard, if you could just get to 20, one more shot, one more good look.” And so I came off, I bumped the rookie. I thought I was gonna be able to get the call, it didn’t, so I just tried to focus and shoot that…My float game, my kinda contact game has improved throughout the year, and I was feeling it, so I thought I’d just kinda let that one ride. B[randon]-Rush and [John] Lucas [III], they were laughing. They were like, “Richard, we’re not rolling with that. That was you saying that you can shoot those shots, but we don’t really believe in that.” (1280)

Random Stuff, etc.
** People calling Alec Burks “Alex” and “Burke”: Craig Bolerjack. (H/T @5kl)
** We’ve heard the guys on the team refer to Richard Jefferson as “RJ,” “Jefferson,” “Rich,” etc. Now we know Richard Jefferson calls himself “Richard.”
** Due to Sidney Lowe’s situation/issues/troubles, Brad Jones–despite his lack of experience–got some playing time on the broadcast.

** From the #GeographyFails files: In the wake of Tyrone Corbin calling Africa a country and China a continent, and Matt Harpring saying Argentina was in Europe, tonight we had Boler asking Harpring whether he had his sights on being “governor of Atlanta.”
** Matt Harpring for whatever reason knows exactly how much change Craig Bolerjack has in his pants pocket. FWIW.
** Trey Burke felt so good after the game that he let some of the other guys get into his daily selfie:

The photo elicited the usual array of responses Trey gets on his photos: “I love you”; “My future husband;” lips emoji; “Sexy ass”; heart emoji; kissy face emoji; “I want you”; “y use so damn fine??”; “Omg you are so sexy it’s ridiculous”; and this (Warning: not safe for conservative people).

The photo was then reposted by Brandon Rush, who got the comment “Lord why trey so fine ?”

Trey Burke fans: thirstiest fans on the face of the earth.

Unintentional Dirty Quote Machines of the Night (UDQM)
** Matt Harpring: Cousins is getting the ball in way too deep.
** Craig Bolerjack on Hayward shot: Buries it in rhythm.
** Harpring to Boler: I know you like Jiffy Lube. Boler: Ha, ha, ha. Harpring: Ha, ha, ha.
** Boler: Came right back out. Diante Garrett slides it to Kanter. Spins, beautiful move, “Little Houdini!”
** Boler: We have a Jimmer Fredette sighting as Kanter slips and slides in.
** Harpring: It doesn’t matter how it goes in.
** Boler: The crowd is getting restless. They want to see Cousins return, and Malone is just letting him ride the pine.
** Harpring to Boler: You’d be one of them powderpuff guys, Boler. (H/T @Mark_R_Pereira)
** Boler on Cousins: The pressure cooker’s on. He’s ready to pop.
** Boler: Evans rubbed off Kanter and slides in. 16 for the big fella.
** Boler on Burks: I’ll tell you, he’s got a great left hand. (H/T @jazzinjersey)

To close: Rudy Gobert either had an itchy shoulder, or his frustrations over lack of time have manifested into a tic.

It might be the latter. Here’s his sad post-game selfie:
