Game 39 Jazz at Pistons: My mind can’t seem to process this game as a win

January 13, 2013

Alec Burks, in calm and nonchalant voice: “Yeeeeuh. Try and blame this game on me, mf’er.”

I completely love the way Burks does something awesome and shows no reaction…because he knows he can do it all the time.

3:17 remaining: Jazz have 12-point lead.
1:34 remaining: Jazz have 9-point lead.
0:27 remaining: Jazz have 2-point lead.

Crucial timeout with 4 seconds remaining, right? This was the Jazz’s timeout:

Final buzzer: Jazz escape losing by the skin of their teeth.

After playing a horrible first quarter, the starters and in particular Big Al really came to play in the third. It was clear Al did not want to lose the game. Burks, meanwhile, was huge in the 4th quarter and spent much of his time on the floor at the point due to Jamaal Tinsley feeling ill and not returning in the second half. Despite escaping with a win, I remain baffled by Corbin’s late-game rotations. He is so lucky the Jazz didn’t lose.

Post-Game Quotage
** Tyrone Corbin: You gotta make sure you continue to do what get you a lead, and play at a certain level, and as we saw tonight, we were up 9 points in the last two minutes, make a couple of turnovers, they get a run, and they back in the ball game. So it’s a lot of time in this league, because guys so talented, you gotta make sure you take care of your business.
** Al Jefferson: I actually said to Paul, you know, “It start with us, and everybody else gonna follow.” That’s what we did.
** Paul Millsap: It’s important that we play with a sense of urgency, you know, me and Al, you know, ’cause if we lead, everybody else will follow us. So it’s really imperative that we do that, to help this team.
** Alec Burks on whether he’s ready to play Miami: I’m just ready. I just want to play again, no matter who it is.

Random Stuff, etc.
** People still calling Alec Burks “Alex Burke”: Ron Boone.
** Oh, that Jeremy!

Unintentional Dirty Quote Machines of the Night (UDQM)
** Booner: Offensive foul or not, you gotta get guys off of you…go to the hole.
** Booner: That was a pump fist, so I imagine it was Big Al.
** Big Al, post-game: They were trying to give me the ball and there was a guy sitting in my lap. (H/T @blazerdog38)
** Big Al, post-game: I been used to scoring on double teams all my life.
** Foye, post-game: Will Bynum is a real strong guy who puts his hands on you, grabs you, and so you know what it is. (H/T @dianaallen)
** Foye, post-game: What we kept saying to each other in the huddle was “Just finish. Let’s finish in time. Let’s finish.”

I read (and have been reading lately) a lot of people, mainly on twitter, saying how good Ty Corbin is and why we should be ok with him and all that. Some of it really makes sense and got me willing to give Ty a (one more?) chance. In fact, my “faith” in the “core 4” (I like the young guys, but this name…) has been higher in the recent past.

But then I see this timeout gif. Wow. Just wow. What the hell is Tyrone Corbin doing? Unbelievable.

      What he is doing: Nothing.

Who is saying that ty is good? I’ll give him til the end of the year to get his act together, but after that I will be on the #firecorbin wagon. He hasn’t really shown me anything to suggest that he’ll be a great coach, with his terrible rotations and poor use of timeouts. I’m giving him a pass on not playing the c4 until the trade deadline, but regardless if we make moves or not, the young guys playing time needs to increase significantly after its passed.
