Game 17 at Jazz at Thunder: The better team won

December 1, 2012

The Jazz have managed to pull off comeback wins on multiple occasions this season (hard to believe we’re already 1/5 of the way through the season). However, most or all of those were against inferior teams. Tonight, they faced a superior team.

I know a lot of people are up in arms over Big Al’s reported comment of “I don’t feel bad at all about this loss.” I didn’t think it was that big of a deal, especially when you read/hear the quote in full (below). From Sad Big Al in post-games after losses and things like taking himself out of the game so that Derrick Favors can stay in, I don’t question Big Al’s desire to win. Plus, give me his honest, candid responses over Carlos Boozer’s disingenuousness any day of the week.

If you do find Big Al’s comments to be a big deal, out of total and utter fairness you can/should probably also freak out over:

1) Tyrone Corbin’s comments (below), which are in a similar vein to Big Al’s;
2) Earl Watson appearing to complain about his minutes again (below; Earl wasn’t happy when he only got 10 minutes of playing time in his first game back. Tonight, he was the third point guard off the bench and entered the game with one minute to go in the fourth, playing 13 minutes);
3) This comment from Alec Burks (tone unknown);

4) The most UDQM-y UDQM in the history of UDQMs (below, in bold), which could see the Jazz getting fined by the FCC or something.

** Al Jefferson, post-game: I don’t feel bad at all about this loss. I think we did a great job against all odds. We kept playing, never gave up.
** Earl Watson, post-game: I was just trying to play hard. I think I got in by default, but my thing is just come in, play hard no matter what.
** Tyrone Corbin, post-game: The guys responded well, man. These guys have been great all year about just playing the minutes that they get on the floor, and just going out competing. (1280)

Random Stuff, etc.
** Enes Kanter scored a new career-high of 18 points on 8-11 shooting and also collected 7 rebounds, all offensive.
** Derrick Favors left the game early due to foot arch distress and did not return.
** Matt Harpring was wearing this:

Unintentional Dirty Quote Machines of the Night (UDQM)
** Harpring on Al: That would’ve been big if he had gone into Ibaka and drawn the foul.
** Harpring: The referee should’ve been on top of that.
** Harpring on Kevin Martin: He gets shots off in a variety of ways. His body’s usually off-balance.
** Harpring on Kevin Martin: Look at his ball placement. He puts it right under Burks’ chin.
** Harpring: These guys play hard for Coach Corbin.
** Locke to Al, post-game: Al, how long are they inside? Al: …[Kendrick Perkins] did a great job pushing me out, and then when I did get the ball, the guy’s sitting in my lap.

    I agree on Big Al and actually think your reasoning applies to what players say to the media in general. I mean, Earl could say no word to the media and still poison the locker room if he wanted to. I hope he knows it better, but the suspect comments keep pilling up on his resume…
