Jazz Introduce Marvin Williams
** Where were you when you heard you were traded? I was in Chapel Hill, working out. I was actually playing some pickup, and when I first heard about it, I really didn’t pay it any mind, ’cause you hear all the time about trade rumors and trades, so I didn’t really think it was for real. And when I was at home, I kinda saw it on the TV screen and kinda saw they had got it done, so I was really excited about coming out to Utah.
** What do you know about the Jazz? The Utah Jazz win. I know they win. They’ve got a history of winning, obviously with Coach Sloan being here, they’ve been proven winners. I don’t know anything about Salt Lake City at all. It’s kinda funny, ’cause when I come here, I’ve never left my hotel room before, so I’m excited to kinda get out into the community, get out to the city and kinda learn a new place.
** Who do you know on the Jazz? Al Jefferson is the only one I kinda know a little bit [same high school class]. He and I kinda played against each other a little bit in AAU, and we played a couple of high school All-Star basketball games together, so he and I know each other a little bit, but he’s the only one I know.
** Have you ever run into Derrick Favors in Atlanta? No, not on the court. Never seen him on the court. I have seen him out in public…but I don’t know much about him.
** Thoughts on the Jazz: Al Jefferson obviously is a big-time presence down there on the block. I’m actually a big fan of Gordon Hayward. I think he really plays hard. Obviously with Devin here, he’s not here anymore, but I’ve always been a fan of his as well.
** What area of your game needs the most improvement? I think consistency is an area of my game that has to become a lot stronger. I have to work to be more consistent, definitely.
** What drives you? Seeing my mother and my father work so hard everyday, just to make anything possible for me and my brothers, it’s been a big influence on me for sure. I’m definitely thankful to have the parents that I have.
** Family: I have two younger brothers and a stepbrother. One of them’s 26; 24; and 21. I’m a new uncle…no kids, not married.
** Marvin Gaye Williams, Jr.: My grandmother, she passed obviously a few years back, but she was a huge Marvin Gaye fan and obviously named my dad after Marvin Gaye. Lucky me, I get named after my dad. [Do you like his music?] I don’t listen to it very much. I don’t listen to it very much, to be honest.
** Jersey number: Obviously, my number’s #24. I’ve been #24 since I was probably 14, 15 years old, but Paul Millsap had #24. And then I wanted #4, and then realized a Hall of Famer has #4 retired in the rafters, so I went with the next choice, and that was #2.
** Summer plans: I’m currently in school right now. I’m trying to finish my degree right now, so I’m going to head back to Chapel Hill today. I’ll probably go to class tomorrow, and I’ll hang out in Chapel Hill for the rest of the summer until early September. [Major?] Hopefully sociology…I’ve been going back since I left. I’m hoping I have maybe two or three more summers before I’m completely finished.
** Giving back: One thing my parents have always taught me, I’ve been extremely blessed. There’s always people that are less fortunate [than you]; I was one of those people that was less fortunate. People gave back to me, so I’m in a position now to give back, so that really is important to me to continue to do.
** Hobbies: I love to play ping pong. Love to play ping pong. I watch a ton of movies. Any movie that looks a little bit interesting, I’ll definitely go check it out.
** Favorite movie: Coming to America. Favorite TV Show: Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.
** Social media: I’m not on Twitter or Facebook or anything…I’m not a big social media guy…I just never really got into it.
