Practice Odds and Ends, 4/31 and 5/1

May 2, 2012

** Tyrone Corbin on returning to SLC between Games 1 and 2: You get another night home in your bed. You get a chance to practice here on our home floor. You’re looking at film in our home building. It’s relaxing. (2)

Seems like a number of Jazz players weren’t overly thrilled about the extra travel, though.

Derrick Favors: [Was it nice to come home between games?] I don’t know, I just do what I told. I just do what I told. [Do you think it’s beneficial to the team to get a few days at home?] I don’t know. I just do what I told. (1)

Paul Millsap: I don’t know. I’m not the coach. I’m not the coach. I’m not anybody that makes the decisions about that, so I go with the flow, go where I’m called. (3)

Jamaal Tinsley: If that is going to give us the best chance to win, (then) we’ve just got to live with it. (DN)

Gordon Hayward: There’s mixed opinions on whether or not you should just stay in the city or whether or not you should come home…for me personally I think it’s good for us to come here, we get to get treatment here at the practice facility, and watch film and go over things, and some of the stuff we wouldn’t be able to do if we were in San Antonio. (3)

** More from Corbin (2):

Q: What do you feel like you know now that you didn’t know before the series began?
A: [The Spurs] are a little better and a little faster than we thought they would be because of their experience and age.

Q: Devin Harris sat 26 minutes in Game 1. Is that the right amount of minutes for him?
A: In that game it was. We’ll see how the game develop. I’d like for everybody to play a little bit more and a little better.

Q: What have you seen from Josh [Howard] since he’s been back?
A: His experience. The last game we played of the year, I thought he had a lot of pop in his legs. He didn’t play his best game the other night, but defensively he does a pretty good job. He understand how to play the rotations, how to be on guys, how to help at different times. He missed some shots, but he’ll be better on Wednesday night.

** Scott Layden on adjustments between Games 1 and 2: You’re in a position where you’ve done some very good things all year, which we had, and you can’t make major changes at this point. (2)

** Love these pics from practice on 5/1, via the Trib:

I’d love to know what that middle pic was about!

** For once, the media got it right in choosing Gregg Popovich as Coach of the Year rather than “coach of sucky team expected to suck that didn’t suck as much as expected.”

One of my favorite quotes of all time was when Pop described the perfect Spur as “guys who have gotten over themselves.” He referenced that again during the announcement press conference (though I love the entire quote below):

“The fact that [the players] allow me to coach them the way I coach them surprises me almost on a daily basis,” Popovich said. “It’s a great group of people who I always say have gotten over themselves.” (Trib)

This, meanwhile, was the best tweet I’ve seen in ages:

Unintentional Dirty Quote Machines (UDQM)
** Big Al on defending Tony Parker in the pick and roll: You gotta be up to help them guards, because Tony Parker coming off that pick one-on-one, and the big is back, that’s kinda like him guarding me on the block. Just gonna be a mismatch, Tony Parker coming at you at full speed. So you gotta be up and maintain it.
** Locke, continuing on with the same line of questioning: Is there any way to take that away so [Parker] doesn’t come with such momentum?
** Big Al, in response: He just so smart to come off that thing at full speed, so the way to stop it is just to be up. Try to be up and be ready to move with it and give Devin enough time to get back in front of him.
** Corbin on Millsap: The being-too-small stuff, I think, he takes that personally, so he’ll go out and show you and that’s why he’ll play with such enthusiasm and energy like he does. Small doesn’t matter because he’s big in what he does. (DN)
