Game 71 @MEM: Yet another nail in the coffin, straw that broke the camel’s back, etc.

Although things did get worse late, the game was lost in the first half. To wit, take a look at the halftime box score:

Take a look at the discrepancy in assists. At the discrepancy in turnovers. At the discrepancy in steals. At the discrepancy in FTAs. The final FTA tally: Utah 25, Memphis 10. And we still managed to lose.

The last play of the first half just sums up the game. CJ had gotten fouled with 4 seconds left, and Memphis calls a timeout after the first free throw. That’s Hint #1. Hint #2: Lionel Hollins subs in Battier and Mayo. Pretty obvious Memphis is going to go for a three, and with four seconds left on the clock, has more than enough time to get a good shot. So what happens? The Grizz get the ball to Mayo. Jazz have no reaction. Mayo drains a 3. Just like that, their lead, which had just been cut to 9, goes back up to 12. Did I mention that Memphis started the game 0-7, and still led 29-21 after one?

Let’s let Al sum up the night, because he did it quite well:

Not helping matters: Devin Harris was Boozered by his hamstring, and left the game for good just 3 minutes in. In the third quarter, we proceeded to lose Favors as well.

So I know we’ve got injuries and other deals going on, but Ty Corbin’s lineups and playing time allocation confound me. I usually don’t get into lineup issues, but what’s going on? Playing AK just 15 minutes tonight, and basically not at all in the 4th quarter yesterday? Putting a vet on the inactive list instead of a rookie? Starting CJ, and still playing Raja more minutes? (I haven’t jumped onto the “I Hate Raja” train by any means; I just think at this point in time he’d be more effective at 25 MPG rather than 35. We can probably all agree Ty is overusing him and underutilizing other guys.) The combinations of players that Ty has on the floor at any given time can’t seem to get much going, either.

Oh well. At least Jeremy was able to make his mama proud, and his 117 friends and family that turned out for the game happy (especially since the last time the entire town crossed state lines to see him play, he didn’t even get in the game):

And you know what? Memphis thanks Jeremy’s section for its support. The emptiness of the arena bests the emptiness of any East Coast team arena we’ve seen this year:

First half highlights here.

Unintentional Dirty Quote Machines of the Night
** Matty on Zach Randolph: He loves to go to his left hand. Even when he goes right, he likes to finish with his left.
** Boler: That is UP! Upward flight!
** Matty: There must be Vaseline on the ball. The Jazz just can’t hold onto the ball tonight.
** Matty on AK: He’s determined to get to the hole here.
** Matty on the Jazz: They’re just losing their men and they’re going backdoor.
** Matty on Favors: I like that he never, I shouldn’t say never, he rarely goes up soft.
** Devin Harris, post-game: It was sore, but never this sore. I don’t know if I pulled it, tweaked it again but like I said, just trying to stop going that fast. Really just felt a good jerk and just couldn’t continue to play.

Me too…he was so excited and happy to be traded to the Jazz and now I wonder if he feels like he never left Minnesota.

I too feel sorry for the big man…
However, if he had caught on a little faster, and been more of what Deron was looking for… I’m just sayin.
I love the big man, not as much as I love my Fes or the wrist band I caught from Fes. Al works his A off every night; I respect that and love that I can count on that. At first he frustrated me, because he was a little slow to catch on and he is a gentile giant.
