Preseason Game 1 of 7 vs POR
[L]ong-awaited game day: climatic. [G]ame not televised: anti-climatic.
–me, on Twitter.
They say that beggars can’t be choosers, so I’m just going to be happy that the pre-season is finally here and we’re not still in the doldrums of summer.
First thought on today’s matchup against the Blazers: I hate that Wesley is gone. I can’t blame him for taking the money and I can’t blame the Jazz for not matching. What I CAN do is blame Portland, and I am. It totally sucks to hear him say “we” and know (or belatedly realize) that he’s talking about them instead of us.
During shootaround, Wesley was talking to the media and someone asked him, “You happy? You content with the decision?” Wesley totally paused before answering, “…Yeah, yeah, I am.” Listen to the audio. I may be reading between the lines, but to me he sounded hesitant and like he was actually saying the opposite.
Game Notes (pieced together from KFAN’s radio feed, ESPN GameCast, and other people’s firsthand accounts):
—Evans apparently had a number of exciting dunks and Sundiata Gaines apparently hit a few exciting treys.
—Listening to the feed, it seemed that AK started off a little rusty. Yucca Man, who was there, says that that was not the case:
—With the starters on the floor, the offense finally began clicking in the third, and AK and Millsap were feeding off each other like it was February 2010 [boy band singing “We Can Rule the Wooo-oorld” in my head].
—Fes was doing it all: dunking, assisting…missing FTs, sitting on opponents and striking the Thinker’s Pose, setting off a chorus of “WTFs” in the SLC Dunk game thread by hitting an 18-footer, and getting rim blocked.
On getting rim-blocked: “I don’t know what to say. When I jumped I didn’t think about dunking it but when I looked up I was like, ‘Wow, I’m so close to the rim. Let me try!’ So I tried…I failed. But it was a good move.” (KSL)
—As noted by someone (I can’t remember who, sorry), Johnson is 6’3″. Predictably, Jerry was not pleased: “He blocked a shot and got real cute after that and pointed at the player and from that point he kind of took himself out of the game.” (audio)
OK, so it’s not cool to do what Fes did when the opponent is like a foot shorter than you. However, I must admit that part of me loves the pure entertainment value of it.
—Jazz win. Almost didn’t, but they did.
Today’s Unintentional Dirty Quote Machines:
—Jerry Sloan (pre-game): “…how fast they get tired and start grabbing their pants and bending over…”
—Booner (during game, regarding Evans): “How much pounding can that little frame take?”
Finally, here’s some Baywatch Fes to go along with your morning coffee or evening dessert:
