Do the Jazz know how to dunk?
Through 77 games, the Jazz rank 1st in the league in “Shots Made at Rim,” 3rd in “Shots Attempted at Rim,” and 4th in “At Rim FG%.”
AK has only played 58 games this year (missing 19) and furthermore played less than 20 minutes in nine [mostly “got injured” or “got re-injured”] games. He also ranks 6th on the team in total minutes played this season.
What’s my point?
Hoopdata doesn’t differentiate between layups and dunks, but according to CBS’ Dunk-O-Meter, AK is the Jazz leader in dunks with 73 (which ranks him 23rd in the league). Skipping over Ronnie Brew, who has 64 dunks, we get to Boozer, who’s ranked 31st with 63 dunks in 74 games (despite playing almost 900 minutes more than AK). This isn’t entirely surprising, as Boozer prefers finessey layups over dunks.
You then have to skim waaaaaaaaaaaaay down to find the next Jazzman listed [Dwight Howard’s dunk stats are listed as a point of reference because he is the league leader].
I have to say, though, that having watched just about every Jazz game this season, it sure seems like we dunk more than that. According to CBS Sports, Yatta is the only Jazzman that has not dunked this season.
