Game 32 of 82: Utah Jazz vs. Los Angeles Lakers (9-23)
Bench celebrations were on point tonight!
** Gordon Hayward on Lakers fans at the ESA
There seems like a lot of ‘em always down before the game when we’re out there shooting, which is kind of annoying. But by the time game, you know, time comes around, they’re usually, you know, dispersed on the upper deck, something like that. So we don’t really see ‘em as much.
** Richard Jefferson, asked if he was a Lakers fan growing up
Oh, 100 percent. I was a huge Lakers fan growing up. Magic Johnson, James Worthy, Byron Scott*, Kareem [Abdul-Jabbar], those are the guys I grew up watching, especially when I first started watching the game of basketball. You know, so to have Byron Scott be my head coach to start off my career was a great experience.
* AKA Byron “Coattail” Scott.
** RJ, asked “Trap question: [John] Stockton or Magic, who you going with?”
That’s not a trap question. I was a Magic Johnson fan. Like, John Stockton is all-time leader in assists. He’s all-time leader in steals. You know, he doesn’t need me to be a fan in order to validate everything that he’s accomplished in his career. But I’ll, again, I was born in Los Angeles, Calif. So, I actually grew up not liking Stockton ’cause he was so good, and he was so talented.
** RJ on playing bad teams
We’re not the type of team that can take anyone lightly or you know, come in, relax. We just don’t have that luxury. We’re not that talented. We have to be focused the whole time, like every game is a must-win.
Special Presentation: A Special Brand of Basketball
** Tyrone Corbin on the game
These are the kinda games that you, you know, the young guys have to grow through to learn how to finish games and mistakes not to be able to make, and great to get a win while we’re learning through situations like this…[Trey Burke ] made a couple mistakes, but he kept fighting, and you know, I can’t say enough about not just him, but the group, man. Making mistakes, and we learn from ‘em, and we keep fighting our way through it, and that’s the way we’re, that’s the only way we’re gonna get better™, that we stay together, and keep fighting, and encouraging each other…We’re getting better™. We’re learning.
** Marvin Williams on the game
It was a total team effort tonight. You know, offensively, defensively, guys were out there helping each other. We were sharing the basketball. It was a total team effort tonight for sure.
** Derrick Favors on the first game-winner of his career* at any level
I’m excited about it. You know, I’m pretty sure, I gotta call my mom. ‘Cause she probably asleep, she didn’t see it. So Imma call and tell her.
* Just posted Favors’ “Get to Know,” which was done at the beginning of the season and in which he mentions he’s never hit a game winner in his life.
** Trey Burke on the Jazz crowd
You know obviously it was a lot of LA fans as well [in the crowd], but you know, I think we, I think the crowd, you know, for the most part did a great job of, you know, cheering us on.
Jazz Coach Saying Bad Word
Enes Kanter gets called for traveling in the first quarter. Corb responds with:
Jazz Coach Earning His [Not Tax-Free] Paycheck
Sidney Lowe not only reminded Corb to call a timeout tonight (Brad Jones was also on deck)…
…he conducted one (H/T @JazzBasketball1):
Random Stuff, etc.
** Marvin Williams has decided to wear the mask for the rest of the season because he now feels uncomfortable without it.
** Things that do not match, at all, not even a little bit: Sidney Lowe’s suit.
** Jerry Sloan :)
Unintentional Dirty Quote Machines of the Night (UDQM)
** Craig Bolerjack during the pre-game show: My partner…[long pause]…Matt Harpring. (H/T @its_computers)
** Matt Harpring: Favors doing a nice job of making it on hard on Kaman.
** Harpring on Xavier Henry bucket: You can’t let a guy come right down the middle, straight line drive.
** Boler: Alec Burks on a wiggle, inside, put it up.
** Boler on Hayward dunk: His explosion, he was up and he met it.
** Tyrone Corbin: Nick Young is a handful for anybody.
** Gordon Hayward on his last shot and Favors’ game-winner: Got up to the rim with the soft finish, and he was able to come up and clean up. So I saw him with the finish, and that’s all I needed to see.
** Marvin Williams on Gary Briggs: He’s been huge for me.
