Horny Bits: Leftover Odds and Ends

One. Here are some quotes from Phoenix Suns General Manager Ryan McDonough on why Jeff Hornacek was their man:

** “We’re also looking for someone who can communicate…You know as a player he was a leader, and a great communicator. He was a winner, and we think that he did exceptionally well in his interview, and he has some great ideas. But more importantly, he can communicate those ideas to the players, and the fans, and the rest of the community here in Phoenix.”

** “He is very bright. He has a good presence about him. I think he has some very natural leadership qualities, so those were my first impressions of him. Then as we sat down and talked a little more about basketball, I was able to see his feel for the game, in terms of how he thought the game, how he would be able to utilize different players on our roster. We also had him draw up a few plays on the white board and you could just see how creative he is, in the different ideas he had. …

We gave him different scenarios, one with the Utah roster and one with the Suns roster. We gave him the game time and score, and where the ball is in the situation, just to see how he thinks. He was really, really impressive in doing that.”

** “Another thing that we were really looking for, was a big-time development guy, who could make our players better, both those players that we have on our roster now and the players that we’re going to bring in in the future. Jeff got rave reviews with his on-court work with players in Utah.” (Suns)

So this is what we’ve lost: Great communication skills, creative play-drawing, impressive situational play-calling, and player development.

Two. I don’t know whether these tweets are connected or not. All I know is the order these tweets came out (see timestamps):

Three. From the Trib:

Aware that the chances of leaving Utah for another job were increasing, Hornacek recently reached out to [Gordon] Hayward.

“I just told him, if I do get a job somewhere, even though I’m coach somewhere else — I feel a pretty good bond with him — if he needs some sort of advice on something to give me a call.”

Four. During an interview with Suns “Social Media Specialist” Espo, Horny was asked whether ex-teammates looking for coaching jobs have come out of the woodwork.

That next morning [after the announcement], I don’t think the phone has stopped ringing since then. So yeah, you know, that’s, I was warned about that was gonna happen. And you know, all the guys that I’ve played with, you know, it’s tough to get into coaching, and they’re looking for opportunities, and you try to talk to all of them.

But at the end of the day, we need to find the best coaches possible to try to help us here, help me, and help turn this thing around. So if some of those are ex-teammates, great. But if not, then you know, it’s not a time to hire your buddies.

*Cough* Tyrone Corbin *Cough*

Five. Espo also commented during the interview that Suns President of Basketball Operations Lon Babby has recently talked about how the Suns have done a poor job of connecting to the team’s past. An added bonus of Hornacek’s hiring is therefore the connection to Suns history. I like the way they think.

Six. I don’t know what brought on 1280’s decision to bash Karl Malone on air yesterday. It was perhaps this tweet from Bill Oram, who was at Hornacek’s introductory press conference:

jeff karl

Per Diana Allen, comments made by 1280 personnel include:

** The Jazz should not even entertain the idea of hiring Karl Malone in any capacity at all because you wouldn’t want to get a fan movement behind it.

** Karl would be a HORRIBLE example to Derrick Favors.

** Karl would interrupt Ty to tell players how “true Jazz basketball” is played. Ty would call a play and Karl would interrupt and say that’s not how Jerry do it (yes they tried to talk like Karl). How awful it would be for Ty to have to deal with that. Karl would just want everything how Jerry did that and that would be so awful for Ty.

** Karl would want to teach the bigs how to play like he did and this would undermine Ty.

** The Jazz should interview him to set him up to fail by saying “Karl, you can have this job if you can say one sentence in perfect English” and then they just laughed and laughed saying how Karl could never do that.

** Ty is too busy to babysit Karl.

Shameful and despicable (especially the “perfect English” part). That’s all.

And furthermore, your bosses include Randy Rigby and Kevin O’Connor and you’re going to make fun of the way people talk?

Thoughts?
