David Locke is doing a series of “Get to Know” interviews with Jazz players. Only two have been posted so far, but there are supposed to be more coming soon. First up: Paul Millsap.

“This is Paul Millsap. 6’8″ from Louisiana Tech University.”

Mom
Inspirational…She’s a woman who works hard. Always provided for our family. Never gives up. She’s my heart.

It was a good day in the Millsap household when…
When nobody got in trouble on me.

Which brother was the one that followed the rules, and which was the one that tested boundaries?
[Note: Paul has three brothers.] I was definitely the one that followed the rules. Elijah was the one that tested the most.

Greatest high school sports moment
When I made the varsity team my sophomore year. A lot of people said I wouldn’t be able to do it, or I couldn’t do it, but I went out there, proved them wrong [and] made the team. … I was the only sophomore starter on the team, which was a big deal.

First teacher/coach/mentor to see something special in you
My first, second, third, fourth grade teacher [in Denver, CO]. All these years I had her for my teacher, and she told my mom she wasn’t going to have to work with me. So I’m glad that came true. She instilled it in me early. She actually thought I was kind of a genius. I didn’t put out the work, but I thank her for it. I wouldn’t be here without her. [Do you see her when you’re in Denver?] Haven’t seen her the past two years, but before then, I was seeing her every year.

Rapid fire
** First pair of basketball shoes: I can’t even remember. I think they were my brother’s. I don’t even think they were mine…my foot was always big, so that’s why my feet look so bad right now, because I had to squeeze into his shoes, which were smaller.

** First car you ever drove, and how old were you: I was, I want to say, 16, 17. I drove a Kia, a stick shift, and you know, stick shifts are tough. Imagine a 6’8″ guy in a Kia being stuck at a light. So those were hard times for me.

** First car you ever owned: That was it.

** Favorite meal: Maybe some chicken; rice; and vegetables.

** What was on the walls of your childhood room: Probably nothing. Nothing at all.

** If you were an actor, what kind of actor would you want to be? Definitely a Denzel Washington-type. Smooth, can get, you know, can be in a action movie but can also be in a drama. Pretty much do anything.

** If you could have dinner with three people, dead or alive, who would they be? Oprah Winfrey is one. Martin Luther King, and Bill Gates.

** First-ever game winner: I was in the sixth grade. I was playing on my brother’s team, which they didn’t want me on the team. But I actually played that game and hit a 3-point shot to win the game. It was one of my favorite moments ever.

** Superpower you’d pick: Ability to fly.

** First video game you ever played: Super Mario.

** First dunk: In the 10th grade.

** Worst job you ever had: Worst job, only job I had was working at a lumber company. I didn’t do too well…before then, I actually worked with my father. He had a moving/hauling service, moving/hauling company, and we used to work with him at young ages.

** Who would you rather play with in their prime, Stockton or Malone? John Stockton…’cause he passed the ball.

** Best Halloween costume: I was T-Pain one year. I thought that was kind of funny.

** Best Christmas present: Not sure…anything that’s given from my family.

** Best date you’ve ever been on: I’m not going to answer that.
