Karl Malone Previews the 2012-2013 Utah Jazz
** Karl on playing the young guys:
I always say, the world we live in now, you have to be in the now. You have to put these guys in the position to excel, which [the Jazz] have done. But I like to be the devil advocate here. What if they’re not gonna be here? This is a wonderful time to start playing these young kids, [Derrick] Favors and [Enes] Kanter, because with the money [teams] throw out there to [players]…
I think it’s a awesome time to start playing these young guys who’s gonna be stars in this league, but they will only [re-sign with the Jazz] if they play. Favors, what, 20 years old now? Kantner, probably 20, 21, maybe? That’s a good time to do it, because you gotta think that maybe they don’t wanna be there; maybe they not gonna be there next year.
** Karl’s picks for starting lineup on opening night (I think): Alec Burks, Mo Williams, Paul Millsap, Derrick Favors, and Al Jefferson.
Karl suggested turning the point guard position over to Alec Burks. “I think if you put that kid in that situation, he gonna excel.” Burks would play with Mo in the backcourt, and they would switch on defense.
On Millsap at the 3: “Paul Millsap is a three that can cause matchup problems with the three, but he can [also] guard the three.”
I assume he’s starting Big Al at center because he is starting Millsap and Favors, and said he would tell Kanter “to be ready to go in real soon.”
** Karl made a point of saying that Corbin should not be referred to as “Ty,” but “Coach Tyrone Corbin.”
** In the middle of the segment, Karl demonstrates the classic Jazz pick and roll and its many options for the second time in as many days on NBA TV.
The three guys Karl imagines on the floor besides himself and Stock during the demonstration are Jeff Hornacek, Greg Ostertag, and Bryon Russell. Tag’s instructions back in the day: Try not to hurt nobody, stay out of the way, and you gon get a layup. And finish.
** Karl’s best- and worst-case scenarios for the Jazz: Best is fighting for the 3rd or 4th seed, and worst is 8th but with no one wanting to play them.
