Tyrone Corbin Discusses Derrick Favors

Why isn’t Derrick Favors playing more?
Matchups, rotations, the way the game’s going. Just the way the games have flowed.

Note: Corbin rattled off these reasons like he’d memorized a list.

Having watched film of Game 2, do you feel you should’ve brought Favors back in sooner during the 20-0 run?
[The Spurs] went on a 22-2 run to finish the half from the 7:05 mark in that game to the end of the first half. A 22-2 run. I mean, I don’t think that one guy may or may not have made a difference in that we all have to play better.

That was with the group that we started with, we subbed them back in, and they made a run on us. We have to play better, man. We gotta finish quarters off…End of the third quarter, we were right in there and they made three three-pointers at the end of the third, and we had our big lineup in then. So we have to play better.

The Jazz’s +/- is positive for the series when Favors is on the floor and negative when he’s not. Where is that valid and where is that misleading?
Well, it’s valid ’cause when he’s on the floor we got a plus. It’s misleading when he’s off the floor we got a minus…

Derrick should play more, and I gotta find a way to get him more minutes on the floor. [Whether that's with the big lineup], we gotta see. We gotta make sure we give ourselves a chance to win, and we need everybody to play better, and with him on the floor we are better. (KALL)

What particularly pisses me off is the fact he just doesn’t admit he was wrong. For a scrub who role played for 16 years, one would certainly expect a lot more humbleness.

If there are 5 guys on the floor surrendering a 22-2 run on 7 minutes right after the single guy who has positive +/- on the team for the series goes out, it is obviously on the coach to do something, even if that means taking all five guys out! Anyway, I’m sure you restricted yourself merely to the quotes because anyone with a brain can see the wholes. :)

I must say that I bet KOC and Rigby see them too, so Ty better get his act together soon.

I meant holes. Boy, do I feel like David Locke now!

        Bahahaha.

You’re exactly right, by the way. I wrote some stuff and then deleted it all, deciding to let Tyrone do all the talking.

Re the scrub part, had this conversation with Diana Allen yesterday. They say that journeymen make the best coaches and that former star players don’t, because stars can’t understand the perspective of the “average” NBA player. On the flip side of that, it’s possible that former journeymen could be resentful of stars and guys with talent since they had to work and scrap for everything they ever got, while watching everything come so easily to guys with talent/lottery picks or seeing stars get everything handed to them on silver platters. Food for thought.

Yup, food for thought. I’ll add that Ty’s shown signs he doesn’t feel this sort of resentful feelings. For instance, DeMarre worked and scrapped for everything he got, and Ty didn’t hesitate to take him away when Josh was ready to go. Same with Al and Paul. They’ve had some pretty bad games sometimes (even lacking effort, in which we were only in because of the play of Derrick and Enes. Ty would give the crunch time minutes to Al and Paul regardless, though. So, maybe he is resentful, but he mostly acts like an ultra conservative “stars win games” coach.

oh you guys…so this guy who takes over after the explosion of last year, takes this team to the playoffs with kids and cast off vets this year (his first as a full time coach) and you dare call him a scrub? Maybe I not sure as to the usage of scrub but it sure as heck sounded like an insult to me. Why the hostility? I think the dude has earned the benefit of the doubt until the playoffs are over don’t ya think?

Think I speak for modernagejazz as well when I say that by “scrub,” we just meant a non-star role player. We were also referring to the type of player Tyrone was during his playing career, not as a coach.

Thanks Moni, that’s exactly what I meant. For the record, I agree Ty did some fine coaching in many aspects. But coaching is a complete job, and when Ty screws it up, it is also up to us to voice it.
