Off-Day Quotage and UDQMs

April 24, 2012

For those wondering why it took Tyrone Corbin so long to try the “Big 3″ lineup of Al Jefferson, Derrick Favors and Paul Millsap even though it’s been bandied about since the end of last season:

** Jeff Hornacek on how the “Big 3″ lineup came to be: What’s happened is, with CJ being injured, it’s kind of forced us to play Paul more at the 3. (2)

** Earl Watson on who or what has impressed him the most in the past few weeks: That’s been Devin Harris, Paul Millsap, Al Jefferson. Those guys have been consistent. Paul’s been big…going from playing the four position to the three position, which was I think the greatest move that coach made of the season, going with the big lineup. It really saved our season. And Devin has been major with becoming who he is within what we do…

And Al Jefferson is to me that guy that’s been there all year from Day 1. He’s clutch down the stretch, big-time jumpers, blocking shots, playing defense. Big Al is just Big Al. He’s been an All-Star all year. So those guys have been carrying us. (1)

** Watson’s prediction for the Suns game: Knowing our team, it’ll be like five overtimes. We’re gonna win in the fifth overtime…and I think the last two to three minutes is gonna be a nailbiter. We seem to find a way to win those with Paul Millstop making the big play down the stretch. (1)

Not a typo. Don’t know whether it was intentional or not, but Earl called Millsap “Paul Millstop.”

** Tyrone Corbin on whether he spoke with Jerry Sloan after the Magic game: No, I didn’t. You know, I wanted to talk to him and I didn’t see–I didn’t get a, you know, all the stuff that was going on, I didn’t get a chance to see him and I was a little longer than normal in the back, so. (1)

** Hornacek on Favors: When Derrick’s in the pick and roll, we never worry because we know he’s going to do the right thing…A lot of guys can be athletic and long but don’t have a clue what they’re doing. Derrick sees things develop ahead of time. (2)

Big Al: Unintentional Dirty Quote Machine of the Day
** On recognizing double teams: When I’m dribbling the ball down, that’s why I like to do it slow, and I notice the guys, they was calling “Blue, blue.” And I know when they said blue, that mean a double. So I notice the guy was coming, you know, to sit in my lap. Sometime he was coming all the way, and sometime he would act like he was coming.
** On responding to double teams: Giving it up is the right thing to do. It’s the unselfish thing to do.
** On passing to Devin Harris for the 3 vs. the Magic: That second time, they didn’t want to double. Big Baby and Coach Van Gundy was telling, “No blue. No blue.” Jameer Nelson must’ve misunderstood, and he came anyway.
** On whether he expects a close game vs. the Suns: I just go in there with an open mind. Try to get it out early. Look at it like it’s gonna be a blow-out.

    Wow Al, haha.
I love Earl’s point of view. He is always so honest and spot on. Most often I totally agree with him. I would love for Earl to replace Matt one day…
