BREAKING NEWS: Golden State Warriors will not retain Coach Keith Smart

Jerry Sloan….is the man to take this franchise forward!
I also predict that he will in fact become the next GSW coach! ;) He needs input in this summers acquisitions…but I forsee great things…. If not… my tea leaves will have come from China rather than India….
by BritWarriorGSW on Apr 28, 2011 2:22 AM CST

I keep hearing this here, but didn’t Jerry say he was retiring?
Are we not believing that?
by ohcleverhansyou on Apr 28, 2011 3:36 AM CST

No sir….we are not!
Well I am not anyway… ;)
by BritWarriorGSW on Apr 28, 2011 3:37 AM CST

Haha alright, I’ll hope with you.
by ohcleverhansyou on Apr 28, 2011 3:38 AM CST

He said he’d consider coaching under the right circumstances.
by Naticus on Apr 28, 2011 4:45 AM CST

think of the jump he’d be making
mormon capital of the world to the bay
by bamboobanga on Apr 28, 2011 4:46 AM CST

Well, he’s not Mormon. I bet he wouldn’t mind so much. Bay Area fans are a lot like SLC fans. Hugely fanatical but probably a lot less demanding of victories.
by Naticus on Apr 28, 2011 4:55 AM CST

gswscribe: I’m hearing the Warriors are interested in prying Jerry Sloan out of retirement
by Sinigang on Apr 28, 2011 2:28 AM CST

Not. Gonna. Happen.
by doubleteapot on Apr 28, 2011 2:29 AM CST

Gentleman’s bet with you that it does….
by BritWarriorGSW on Apr 28, 2011 4:20 AM CST

The only thing
is hes SO OLD
by tom88gsw on Apr 28, 2011 4:33 AM CST

Some say OLD…
others say EXPERIENCED…
Personally I am of the opinion that a young team almost always needs an experienced head in charge. A younger successor can then be groomed over a longer period….
by BritWarriorGSW on Apr 28, 2011 4:45 AM CST

Older than Nellie? The dude can coach.
by Naticus on Apr 28, 2011 4:46 AM CST

But for how long? This would seem like a bandaid
by qin on Apr 28, 2011 5:01 AM CST

Keep him for three years, and I think he changes the whole culture here for years and years to come.
by Naticus on Apr 28, 2011 5:43 AM CST

As Naticus suggests…
I think even if its a 2-4 year deal, he can have a significant impact into these young players to have them playing a much structured game of basketball. While the ‘Devil-may-care’ style of the run n gun offense is great fun to watch, it is never going to win championships in the modern era, due to the importance of physical power in today’s game.
Therefore we MUST have discipline on defense and we must understand how to use some of the most basic basketball fundamentals like the pick n roll.
Jerry Sloan brings this… yes he is a tad harsh and yes there will be some that dont like some of his personal comments, but frankly I could say the same about many people who are meant to be ‘liberal’ in their views.
I think he can truly bring a new direction and path to the team and if the no.1 Assistant coach is actually a younger guy but one who we believe could be a great head coach for the future, then who better to play understudy to?
by BritWarriorGSW on Apr 28, 2011 8:30 AM CST

The only shocking thing is that he was the first coach fired
I thought John Kuester would be gone first
by doubleteapot on Apr 28, 2011 2:59 AM CST

Stop it now..
We all know were getting Mussleman back.
by qin on Apr 28, 2011 3:16 AM CST

I personally would prefer mike singletary
by bigkino217 on Apr 28, 2011 3:18 AM CST

Ernie Johnson
by tafkasam on Apr 28, 2011 3:37 AM CST

I wonder how Charles Barkley would be as a coach…
I bet he would tell his players, “Anytime someone get’s in your face, throw them an elbow.”
by spacedout on Apr 28, 2011 3:44 AM CST

I support Barkley for coach I don’t care if we are horrible
it would be incredibly entertaining for a year or so.
by brutusbrutus on Apr 28, 2011 8:29 AM CST

Sweet, let’s get Jim Harbaugh
by djfivenine on Apr 28, 2011 4:24 AM CST

Let’s get PJ.
He might need to feed his kids.

So, who wants to start the re-hire Don Nelson movement?
:-D
by Zorgon on Apr 28, 2011 4:09 AM CST

My opinion was and is that Nellie should have coached this team
I would have liked to see what he could have done with this roster. Now I think that ship has sailed.
by brutusbrutus on Apr 28, 2011 8:30 AM CST

+1
Love me some Nellie. Hope the Hall calls him soon. Every great Warriors moment for me came with him as the coach.
by Uwe Blog on Apr 28, 2011 1:54 PM CST

Totally stoked.
Bro.
Let’s get Don Nelson.
by belilaugh on Apr 28, 2011 5:54 AM CST

Also, anyone who is asking for Mark Jackson (didn’t read, don’t know if anyone did) is basically asking for Keith Smart 2.0 (but only if 2.0 doesn’t imply that he is a continuation of Keith Smart and not actually an improved version).
Seriously, the guy is an idiot. I have no doubt he would coach on “feel”. Don’t trust anyone who has to resort to cheap gimmick catchphrases in order to keep his job, that’s a red flag that indicates “conforms to popular opinion”.
Mark Jackson is the type of guy that puts a lot of stock in who is and who is not an “All-Star” (to be fair, that is a personal feeling and unsubstantiated by evidence).
by belilaugh on Apr 28, 2011 6:07 AM CST 101 recs

(OK, so that comment only got 1 rec from GSOMers, but it warranted 100 more recs from me.)

dont think anyone asked for jackson in this thread at least
by bigkino217 on Apr 28, 2011 6:15 AM CST

I’d rather have Marc “Unstoppable Baby” Jackson.
by Sleepy Freud on Apr 28, 2011 6:26 AM CST

Yeah he’s an idiot.
If you ever say that Kobe Bryant is the greatest basketball player of all time, you legitimately have no basketball credibility. If you cannot even evaluate something as easy as MJ vs. Kobe, your basketball evaluation skills suck.
by GovernorStephCurry on Apr 28, 2011 10:57 AM CST

Sloan assisted by Calipari…. ;)
by BritWarriorGSW on Apr 28, 2011 8:42 AM CST

I bet Sloan hates Calipari
They’re such opposites… Calipari builds flashy teams that underachieve, while Sloan’s teams are tough and dirty and usually outperform expectations.
by Uwe Blog on Apr 28, 2011 1:58 PM CST

rick adleman or nellie
like that barcadi gold commercial: “”woo woo, fellas fellas, whats crackin?”
