It’s Game 4 of the Jazz’s first round Playoff series against the future Thunder. The Jazz had taken the first two games in Utah, but lost Game 3 in Seattle.

If you remember the years of chippy, rough and tumble Jazz basketball with affection, this video’s for you. Six techs were called on the Jazz in this one: two on Jerry (ejected), two on Karl (ejected), one on ‘Tag (who was strangely-to-me wearing #39 because Olden Polynice had seniority) for slapping the ball out of an official’s hand, and one on Horny for flinging the ball away from an official because he was pissed about a call. Ah…the good ol’ days when our boys had attitude.

Jerry was asked in the post-game why he got the second technical. His response: “Because he wanted to call it on me and kick me out.” In response to the subsequent “Why?”, Jerry answered, “Oh, I probably wasn’t very polite.” :)

The Jazz ended up losing the game, but won Game 5 in SLC to take the series and move on to Round 2.

That is the coolest Jazz video I’ve seen all year! I’d love to see more of this type of basketball. This year, with the new rules how they are, Ostertag would have been suspended and Payton would have gotten a couple of Techs as well. Awesome series! Thanks for the post.

So many things I wish after watching this! First though, what a difference between Sloan coaching then and Sloan coaching earlier this year. Makes me sad to see the decline, but can also understand why he felt it was his time to go after seeing this drastic difference.

WISH the Jazz (or any NBA teams) played like this now.
WISH Malone would have knocked Payton the F&#$ out. (interesting they ended up on the Lakers together).
WISH and HOPE Malone will be working with Favors.

I’d love to see this type of basketball more too, but in today’s NBA this level of competition and HEART have been banned.

I think Jerry definitely mellowed with age, but another factor was that he had a hard-headed team of Stockton and Malone and vets back then, compared to a bunch of young, green guys this year.

    Favors needs Malone, full stop.
