Orlando Summer League Game 1

July 6, 2010

–The Jazz are sporting jerseys with the new mountain logo on them, and the Koof is sporting a beard.

–Yatta looking like a decent floor general and is being aggressive with the ball, but shot 3-6 on FTs and also collected 3 fouls and 3 TOs to go along with his 7 points and 3 assists in the first half.

–Gordon Hayward doesn’t show up in the box score until 7 minutes into the second quarter–and it’s on a TO. It takes him until 6:30 in the 2nd (and 8 minutes of PT) to score his first point (FT), but at this point still hasn’t been able to get a shot off…leading Rick Kamla to say, “[The Bobcats] know that the Jazz want to get him off…he’s got a nice stroke.” Hayward finally scores on his first shot attempt with 3:22 left in the half–a smooth mid-range jumper.

–Not a very pretty first half for the Jazz. Only one lead change during the half, and at one point it’s 38-20 Charlotte. The halftime score is 52-38, with the Jazz shooting 68% from the FT line compared to the Bobcats’ 91%. Jerry and Phil are not impressed.

–Dragicevic doesn’t get into the game in the first half. Could he be in the doghouse already?

–Funds and/or jersey letters are apparently in short supply in the summer league. James Augustine, who played with Deron at Illinois, is forced to wear a jersey that says “Augustin.”

–Dennis Scott thinks that Jermareo Davidson needs to get his hair done, while Augustine’s “Spanish haircut,” which is “curly” and “unkempt,” also merits some discussion from Scott and Kamla. I can’t say I approve of Augustine’s Gasol look.

–FYI, “Pape Sow” is pronounced “Pop So.”

–Howard Eisley sighting.

–I like the hustle I’m seeing from OJ (including a nice dunk). The Jazz are playing somewhat better and/or the Bobcats have slowed down in the third quarter. Meanwhile, whistles are sounding all over the place (53 fouls through the end of three). The Jazz close to within 2 with less than 2 minutes remaining in the 3rd, and the third quarter ends 64-62 Charlotte.

–The Jazz take their first lead since 2-0 on the first bucket of the 4th. For most of the 4th, Coach Scotty Layden plays the guys that no one has heard of, who also happen to be the guys that got the Jazz back in the game. Then the starters come in, and the Bobcats suddenly have a double-digit lead.

–Hayward steals the ball around mid-court and slams it home. 85-81 with 53 seconds left. It’s his second FGM and FGA in 25 minutes on the court; he also has 5 boards and 2 steals. Augustine scores after a Bobcats TO. 2-point game. Gaines misses potential game winner, Bobcats win.

Post-game update: Love this quote from Hayward: “If I’ve got a good look and I think it needs to be taken, then I’ll take it,” Hayward said. “But, for me, I think the extra pass to a wide-open shooter like Yatta (Gaines) is always gonna be a better look than a contested jump shot.” (desnews)

–Dragicevic is the only guy on the Jazz roster that doesn’t get into the game. (Update: He has a sore Achilles tendon and is day-to-day.)

–Maybe I’m not as big a Jazz fan as I think I am. Dragging myself out of bed in the middle of the night, I found myself half hoping that there wouldn’t be a stream so that I could go back to bed. Or maybe I’ve just gotten too old to handle middle-of-the-night games anymore. Moving on…
