Europe

October 9, 2009

Before I go to bed, I usually make sure that there’s some “padding” between my phone and desk because the sound of phone vibrating against hard surface is jarring. Well, as luck would have it, I forgot to do so two nights ago and was awakened by a text at 2:37 a.m. that said, “Are you watching the game?”

In a nutshell, I completely suck at calculating time differences, and I had gotten game time in London totally, totally wrong. Having learned my [temporary] lesson, I was bleary-eyed but awake for the Madrid game (both games were shown on ESPN here). I got to watch both games on an actual TV instead of a blurry little screen on my computer, which was just competely great. I just checked the schedule and there are no Sunday afternoon a.k.a. 3:30 a.m. games this season, which is also great because despite my continuously growing Jazzion (Jazz passion), old age or something else is making it harder and harder to wake up in the middle of the night for games. But enough about me…

London was sucky due to the ending, but not a heartbreaker due to it being the pre-season. A note on AK’s new hair: the novelty is wearing off. Maybe he’s growing it out so he can bring back the mohawk? Come on AK, do it.

Some notes on some other players:
–I’m excited about Eric Maynor. I love Ronnie Price, but Maynor needs to be the backup PG. I still think the Jazz (at times desperately) need what Ronnie P brings to the floor, and I’d like to see him get minutes at the 2. Unless there’s a mismatch situation, I like the idea of a Maynor/Price backcourt.

–Sap absolutely killed it in the first half in Madrid. He’s a lot more athletic than people know/give him credit for, and he’s great at getting it done without getting any plays called for him.

–KK2 needs to relax. He’s trying too hard, and can’t seem to finish around the basket–which he should have no problem doing.

–Is it just me, or is that Llull kid a dead ringer for Raul Lopez?

–Did Garbajosa jack Gasol’s flavor, or was it the other way around? And do either of them really think that this is a good look?

On a final note regarding the Europe trip, the American media struggles with the existence of foreign teams. NBA.com’s play-by-play only showed Jazz plays, ESPN had only the score of the game (no box scores or play-by-play), and Yahoo Sports didn’t even have the game listed in its Scores & Schedules.
